From spare rooms, garages and gardens, 36 PCC members climbed the virtual equivalent of Alpe D’Huez to raise the cash for the Trussel Trust.

They were joined by three professional riders, four ex-pros and a television presenter during the 24-hour Alpe du Zwift challenge, which ran from 12pm on Easter Saturday to 12pm on Easter Sunday.

Ex-professional sprinter Simon Gaywood recruited current pros Lachlan Morton (EF Pro Cycling), Max Steadman (Canyon/DHB) and Jon Mould (Madison Genesis) to take part.

Former professionals James McCallum, Russ Downing, Dean Downing, Chris Pritchard, and Eurosport presenter Rebecca Charlton, all raised money for the trust.

With lockdown measures imposed due to the coronavirus outbreak, the riders took stints to cover around 1,600 miles between them and climb more than 83,000 metres – equal to conquering Mount Everest 10 times.

The target was to raise “a few hundred quid”, but members and guests managed to raise £3,000 for the foodbank.

“We had a great response and want to thank everyone who took part,” said Rob Ellis, chairman of Portishead Cycling Club.

“Special thanks goes to my club colleagues Steve Marsh, Peter Wyatt and Simon Gaywood who put the entire challenge together in less than six days.”
